What to prepare for interpretation before visiting a Japanese medical institution

Interpretation prep

Accurate interpretation needs preparation. How to organize documents, questions and terminology in advance.

Interpretation conveys the medical team’s explanations accurately. The better prepared you are, the more of your questions you can ask within limited consultation time.

1. Check the documents the institution requests

Requirements for referral letters, imaging and test results vary by institution. Confirm the list first.

2. Write a list of questions

  • Is this treatment worth considering for my condition?
  • How does it compare with other options?
  • What side effects and schedule should I expect?
  • Under which system will the cost be billed?

3. Current medicines and allergies

Writing medicine names exactly as on the package or prescription reduces confusion during interpretation.

4. Decisions are made by you and the medical team

The interpreter only conveys explanations and does not recommend or judge treatment.
